case study: Internal Controls

Unforgettable e-learning modules with videos.

The right practices and routines are important within large, global organisations. Especially when working with large sums of money and many external parties. But one mistake shouldn’t spell disaster.

The ‘Internal Controls’ module tells a story about a situation where not just one mistake is made, but then also all opportunities to solve the problem are missed. The situation gets worse and worse, and more and more people become partly responsible. What could have been done better?

Working with video is not new to our team and yet we manage to challenge ourselves every time. The actors do not talk, and to avoid having a boring voice-over speaking, we opted for an almost David Attenborough-like presenter who sits in the middle of the scene and tells the story.

By the way, we came up with this idea because of an Eminem music video! In that clip, Eminem rapping tells a story that takes place behind him. During the first brainstorming session, we showed that clip, and we were immediately on the right track with the client. Inspiration can come from anywhere!

The transition from static slider to video can be very jarring in some e-learnings. That’s why we paid extra attention to a seamless experience. Text subtly animates over the video and back out; transitions with colour appear smoothly on screen and even Java script was applied to make the menu blocks feel like they are floating on your screen!

Learning through awareness.

Everyone knows there are controls in place to help you deal with sensitive situations, but why they are there and what can go wrong gives weight to the use of these “internal controls”. Therefore, for this module, we decided to address ‘What if things go wrong?’

What would you do in such a situation? Could it have been prevented? And: how big is the impact really? These are the questions that come up while going through this e-learning module.

Video with impact.

The ominous music, the narrator leaning forward and the main characters trying to solve problems in a sweat build an atmosphere of suspense. As if you were in the middle of the story…

In this module, you go through one incident within the company, but with each chapter you step into a new scene involving yet another new colleague. Each colleague has their role in the escalation and has therefore had their chance to apply the right internal controls.

Interactive bites.

Before you are plunged into the situation, its clear what you are going to learn. Learning objectives and examples from other companies give you context so that the scenario does not come out of the blueWant to talk further about this project? Each scene concludes with some questions of conscience: ‘What went wrong here?’ They sometimes seem like obvious questions, but that is precisely what makes you realise that it could happen to you too. The feedback on these questions gives concrete guidance, before you move on to the next bite.
